ON THE SCREEN.

" The Cornier Grocer." A quaint contrast is offered by the two loading characters in " The Corner Grocer," the World Film drama to be screened at Matamata on Saturday. Law Fields plays the old moneymaking but kind-hearted merchant to the life, while Madge Evans is adorable as a little orphan who is adopted by the old man, and eventually brings him happiness. The story is adapted from the play which ran for no less than three years in New York, and is a melodrama of the really human type. The grocer, through natural shrewdness amasses a fortune, and sends his son to college. When the boy gets back he has grown too lofty for any commonplace business, and soon is involved with a discreditable adventuress. He forges his father's name, ruins him, and is charged with the murder of the woman's accomplice. The little orphan girl, now grown up, proves a tower of strength to the old folks in their bitter trouble, and eventually she manages to retrieve the boy from disgrace. Lilian Codk, who was the pretty star who played the juvenile in "Rasputin" plays the part of the little girl grown up, and she is worth watching as an actress with a future. The programme is completed with a grand 2000 ft Keystone comedy —said to be one of the company's best —a Gaumont graphic and the tenth instalment of the serial " The Black Box."
