REMOVING THE MATAMATA COUNTY OFFICE.
Principle Affirmed. At the Matamata county council meeting on Friday, Cr C. A. Stopford brouhgt forward his notice of motion re removing the county office from Cambridge to Tirau. Before discussing the question ho said he was prepared to delete the time limit stated in the orginal notice of motion. Conditions necessitated this. He said, proceeding, that the time was really now, that the two head servants of the county should live in its centre. He had no grievances against the clerk ; the latter was a first-class man and he would like him to remain in his position. But, he should be on the spot. This would be of benefit to all ratepayers, councillors and servants. Cr. Rollett seconded the motion, stating that the clerk had shown his efficiency, yet he would like to see him able to remove to Tirau. The office, which should he in the centre was, instead, situated outside the county altogether. Since the. original conditions were entered into matters had changed, as could be seen by the new valuation. He felt that ithe motion was in the best interest of the whole of the county. Cr Barnett said that three years ago the county had purchased a section, part of which had been reserved for a clerk’s residence. The affirmation of the principle was always in the minds of the councillors and he was glad that the time limit had been deleted from the motion. The chairman endorsed Cr Barnett’s remarks, and stated that the council could not expect the clerk to reside in Tirau until a house was built for him. The council could not build at present. The motion “ That the principle that the clerk reside in Tirau be affirmed, and that when the time was opportune the clerk should take up bis residence in Tirau ” was carried unanimously.
