Lake, who has been teaching at the Waiuku central school for the past three years, has been appointed as assistant at the Matamata school. The Waikato Co-operative Cheese Coy., Ltd., paid out on April 20th as follows Turanga-o-moana £988; Matamata £1147, the figures for 1917 being £985. The Public Works Department gives notice that an area of nearly nine acres in the Patetere* survey district has been taken by proclamation for quarry purposes. The land is situated near Putaruru. The valuation lists for the Matamata county and town area are now open for inspection, and some startling figures are shown. One property in Arawa street, which seven years ago was valued at £BOO, is now valued at £IBOO. A grand social and dance to be promoted by the All Saints’ Girls’ club in aid of Red Cross funds will be held in the Matamata Public Hall on May 24th. Competitions, dances and songs will make up a very pleasant evening. A largely attended meeting of the Matamata Tennis club was held on Tuesday evening, Mr G. G. Bell presiding. It was decided to hold a dance in aid of Matamata and Peria Red Cross funds on May 14th. Excellent arrangements are being made for a highly successful function. A special invitation will be extended to members of the Morrinsville club. In awarding the prizes for the essays on the recent Matamata show, Mr M. McLeod, of Auckland, marked “good” on the paper of Libby Simpson, who gained first award. The second and third prizes were won by Julia Buckley and Frances Gunn respectively. There were six competitors, and the standard of ' the essays was touch above, that of the previous year. . fc After having filled the position of president of the Matamata . branch of the Farmers’ union for eleven years Mr A. A. Bowler did not seek re-election at the annual meeting on- Friday. Whilst in the position Mr Bowler made every post a winning one for the district and the farmers of the province, and particularly deserves the thanks of the Matamata district people. Mr Bowler still remains on the executive. It would appear that it is the practice of some solicitors to fill in an application form (M.C. 133) instead of appearing in support of an application for judgment against debtors by whom the claims are admitted. Attention was drawn to the rules under the Magistrate’s Court Act dealing with the question by Mr W. C. Hewitt at Matamata on Saturday, the solicitor contending that the practice was wrong. It meant that local solicitors were being beaten ” for appearance fees by solicitors from a distance, who should employ the former when they personally could not be present. Mr R. W. Dyer, S.M., said he believed the solicitor’s contentions were correct, and he would so alter his decisions that in future when the solicitor did not appear in support of his application, unless the application was lodged personally by him at the court on the day of sitting, he would not allow appearance fee. In the case under notice the application was made by an Auckland solicitor some days before court sat. A dog found. Sharemilkers requires shed of about 65 cows. A four cow Treloar milking machine for sale. Tenders are invited for the erection of a house in Matamata. Innes and Co., of Hamilton, notify that their prices for ales and stout have been raised, owing to the increased cost of materials. The Hpngahunga Drainage board inserts an abstract of accounts for the year ending March 31st, 1917, in this issue. The nett receipts (not revenue) totalled £3,315 9s 7d, of which £1,500 was from loans. On Tuesday next, the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company will conduct a clearing sale at Te Poi, for Mr G. Davis who has sold his farm. The stock to be disposed of includes twenty-eight choice dairy cows, twenty-four calves, horses, pigs, fowls and implements. Luncheon will be provided.
