PUTARURU ROADS.
Chairman Visits Riding. At tiie monthly meeting of the Matamata County council on Friday the chairman, Cr. J. W. Anderson, reported on having visited and inspected various roads in the Putaruru district as follows: —“The road leading to the Leese and Slade gullies: 1 think it would he a mistake to interfere with this road at the present time of the year as the track through Barnetts is good, and while this is left open the settlers have only one side of a triangle to travel instead of two by following the road. The portion through Leese’s would be mostly a long side cutting, which would require fencing to protect the road from cattle. A small portion near the bridge could easily be improved at small cost and I would recommend this be done. The Waotu-Puketurua road leading to the cheese factory is a filling over a swamp and no doubt requires attention. The metal is laying close handy already broken, which should be put on the road.” The chairman also suggested that metal available for other portions of this road should be used, and that a piece of the same road nearer Putaruru which was bad last year should receive the surfaceman’s attention.
The engineer reported as follows :
In accordance with the council’s instructions in company with Cr Barnett I inspected the line of road from Waotu to Irwin’s block. A considerable portion consists of a survey line'through heavy bush and the balance is a pack track. In order to assist them to get their cream out I would recommend that the bush be cleared and some of the wet places made passable, the cost not to exceed £6O. In company with the chairman I again inspected the road to Slade’s Gully, also the metalling at Taylor’s swamp, and the proposed metalling near King’s on the Putaruru-Waotu road. Strong has completed the grader work on the Lichfield-Waotu road, Weeks having completed the bridge on the Maraetai road, Strong then proceeded to fill in the approaches thus completing the work for the Maraetai Farms, Ltd., and the road is now open for through traffic from Maraetai to Waotu and Lichfield. Strong then proceeded to Rollett’s Road, this should be completed by the end of this week. I would then like your permission to start the Nga-tiri-Okokiriki road on Monday next. The pipes for the culverts have all been delivered and the season is getting late hence the urgency.
Both reports were adopted,
