ROLL OF HONOR.
Lance-Corp. G. Quinlan. It was a source of great regret to many people throughout the province to learn that in faithfully following, the high call of National service and duty Lance* Corporal George Quinlan, aged 30, third son of Mr and Mrs P. Quinlan, of Matamata, had made the supreme sacrifice. The Quinlan family is one known throughout the province, and George was quite a favorite in all his many spheres of action. He left New Zealand with the 13th reinforcements and fought through many engagements, receiving a wound in one. He did not leave France, however, and later re-joined his company to receive promotion to the rank of lancecorporal. In the last letter received from him by his parents the good soldier stated that he had been recommended to sit for a commission, and would shortly be leaving France. Apparently he went into action at the very beginning of the great German offensive, for he received his death wounds on Tuesday, March 26th. Like the rest of his family George Quinlan was a true sportsman in every sense of the word, and while in Matamata was prominent in several branches. He was a consistant rider in show-ring events, rode well to hounds as a member of the Matamata Hunt club, and was a Matamata Rugby union representative. Genuine sympathy has been extended to his parents, brothers and sisters by a very large circle of friends. One of Lance-Corporal Quinlan’s brothers, Claude, has seen service in France, where he received wounds, and is now a sergt.major instructor at the Trentham camp.
