WAHAROA.
The Waharoa Red Cross society resumed its fortnightly meetings in the hall on March Gth. There was a very satisfactory attendance of members, and it is pleasing to note the enthusiasm for the cause has re-awakened among the lady residents of the district. Mrs James Blyth was re-elected president, and Miss M. Scherer retained as secretary. Afternoon tea was provided by Miss Scherer, and by Mrs King on the 20th. The collection for the two meetings amounted to £6 6s 6d, which sum included two donations of £1 each. The following garments were forwarded to Morrinsville: —6 suits pyjamas, 4 pairs underpants, 4 undervests, 14 roller bandages, 12 triangular bandages, 1 scarf. When making print bags last year in connection with Red Cross work several of the Waharoa school children enclosed little notes of sympathy or greeting to those in hospital who might receive the bags. As a result two of the pupils, Miss Dora Whitworth and Miss Phyllis Tong, received letters of appreciation and thanks; the former from Sergt.Major Chas. Parnell, of Auckland, and the latter from Bandsman J. Lees, of the N.Z.R.B. Needless to say the children much appreciated this kind recognition of their work. At a general meeting of the Waharoa Athletic club held on February 26th Mr A. K. Weeks was elected president for the present year, and Mr J. Ryan as secretary." Judges and other officials were also nominated for the forthcoming annual Easter meeting. On Tuesday, 19th inst., a Welcome Home was tendered' to Sergeant McGill and Private E. Tyson, who have recently been invalided home from the front. Both have been for some time on active service and have been seriously wounded; therefore it was with proud'hearts and warm welcomes home that the residents of Waharoa and the surrounding districts turned out to do honor to their returned heroes. Despite the threatening weather there was a large number present, Mr A. J. Tong delivering the address of welcome. Sergeant McGill, in responding for himself and Private Tyson, said they were both glad indeed to be back again amongst their friends, and as they had tried to do their duty at the front they were now prepared to again perform their duties as citizens. He also thanked the residents for their kindness to his family during his absence. Loud applause and “ They are Jolly Good Fellows.” Dancing and cards were tho chief amusements, interspersed with songs by Mrs Wade, Miss Scott, and Messrs Dawson and Scott. The dance music and accompaniments were played in tho usual finished style by Mr and Mrs Darby, and the supper arrangements were under the capable direction of Mrs Blyth, Mrs Wade and Miss Gregson. Miss F. M. Gregson, of Auckland has been appointed relieving assistant at the Waharoa school in place of Mrs S. Clark who is absent on sick leave. Mr J. Wright, who has been studying in Auckland, is home on a short holiday before going into camp next month. Lieutenant Neal Clark has been spending a short holiday here. He returned to camp last Wednesday.
