PUTARURU.

RETURN SOCIAL. A social evening as a return function to that recently given by the members of the Putaruru branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was held at Putaruru on Friday last, and was well attended. The floor of the hall was in excellent condition for dancing, while special music was played by an orchestra consisting of Mrs Anderson (piano), Mrs Ryan and Mr 11. Sayers (violins), and Mr Litherland (trombone). The orchestra’s time was really good, and the players were congratulated on their efforts. During the evening songs were rendered by Messrs L. Litherland, W. P. Roberts and A. G. Yardley. Mrs Scholles rendered a recitation, and Master Stanley Holland gave a violin solo “La Serenata.” The latter item, played by a boy, was especially good. In every respect the function was a success, and reflected credit on Mrs F. C. Barnett and the ladies’ committee. During the evening Mr W. P. Roberts addressed the assemblage on matters relating to the public hall. He said it was pleasing to record that as a result of the evening the sum of £4 would be available for hall funds. He regretted, however, that greater interest was not taken in hall affairs by the settlers, because the building was one to be proud of. So little interest was taken that a committee could not be elected, and consequently the duties of controlling the hall fell upon himself as trustee. Renewed interest was required from the settlers if dire straits were to be avoided. The overdraft was steadily mounting up, which could bo expected when it was explained that the whole revenue of five months had not been over £5 ss, and against this were half-annual expenses totalling £22 7s 6d. Visitors to Putaruru expressed surprise at the apathy displayed. Mr Roberts concluded by appealing to the settlers for more support, and thanking the ladies for allowing the profits of the evening to be devoted to hall funds.
