DAIRY COWS.

Is There a “ Best ” Breed P In the opinion of Mr MelvinC. Smith, a breeder of dairy cattle, in Illinois, U.S.A., there can be but one answer to the above qnestion. He writes : —“ It is this : There is no best breed. The best breed for you to keep is the one you personally prefer. Do not be deceived into believing that one breed is better than another. The fact is that one breed will do as well as another, provided good individuals are kept and proper care is taken of the herd. This fact has been proved by our cowtesting association. The records show that one member is making a decided success with Holsteins, while others are doing equally as well with Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Guernseys, Jerseys and milking Shorthorns. I venture the assertion that the man who is making the greatest success with Jerseys would probably have little luck with Holsteins and so on. There is one breed that you fancy better that all the others. After all, it is a matter of sentiment, yet you will do well to heed it. Get individuals of the breed you like best. Be sure to get the best you can afford. If your purse is small, purchase a few good ones rather than a number of poor grades. There is nothing more discouraging than trying to make a profit by feeding high priced feed to scrub cows. It isn’t breed that counts : it is individual taste, selection and care.”
