TAIHOA.

The annual settlers' picnic was held at.Taihoa on Saturday last on Mr P. Quinlan's ideal property, and the attendance was especially large. The chairman and secretary of committee, Messrs W. S. Wilson and M. Gould, had left nothing to chance, and consequently with good weather it remained but for the settlers to put the necessary life into the proceedings to ensure success. That the latter was attained was admitted by all, and the wish was expressed that more similar days might he held in the summer months. Many games and races were conducted, and plenty to satisfy the inner callings of*man and woman were on hand. Such was the day that the date of next year's picnic will be eagerly awaited by all who were present, and it is a certainty that when it is held an even larger attendance will be recorded. Some of the results of races were: — Married ladies' race Mrs Madill 1, Mrs J. J. Holmes 2. Single ladies' race —Miss Ashton (Te Poi) 1, Miss Brown (Hinuera) 2. Married men's race—J. Murray 1, M. Madjll 2. Single 'men's race —Mr R. " Jones " 1, Mr T. Cotter 2. At Mr P. Quinlan's invitation a large number of friends of the family assembled at his homestead last week-end for a tennis and bowling afternoon. Visitors were present from Matamata, Morrinsville, Hinuera, Waharoa and surrounding districts, and all were loud in their praise of Mr Quinlan's hospitality. Ample refreshments were provided, and with all games keenly fought nothing could result but an extremely pleasant afternoon. The greens were in excellent order, and Mr and Mrs Quinlan again proved what a splendid host and hostess they are. It was but fitting that the afternoon was concluded with cheers and musical honors for them.
