A lady's cloak, left at Mr J. H. Hooper's rooms, is awaiting claimant.

Mr J. A. Mason gives thanks to those residents who assisted him at the recent fire.

Mr C. D. Dawson notifies that all accounts owing to him may be paid to Mr W. S. Ruthe.

The Taihoa school picnic will be held in Mr P. Quinlan's grounds on Saturday, March 2nd.

Miss Ellen Butcher has been appointed pupil teacher at the Matamata school, vice Miss M. A. McGuire, resigned.

It ( is said that there are some interesting cases set down for hearing at the next sitting of the Matamata Magistrate's court on Friday, February 22nd?

Mr W. C. Vincent notifies that he has taken over the Matamata butchery business, and- in killing only prime beasts asks for the support accorded his predecessor. The rooms being built by Mr W. A. Turkington for Mr J. H. Hooper are now nearing completion, and the latter expects to remove to this more central part of the town shortly.

The Hungahunga Drainage board invites tenders for improving over a mile of the Waihekau stream near Waharoa ; cleaning out 145 chains of a drain at Manawaru, and also the Waipuna creek at Waihou.

Among the Matamata mothers who signed the letter of sympathy, and subscribed to the wreath placed on the grave of the Okauia soldier last week, were Mesdames M. Griffiths and J. Casley. These names were omitted when the list appeared.

Extra classes for the Matamata A. and P. Association show are advertised.

Notice is given by the Matamata County council that a 10 percent, penalty will be added to all rates unpaid after Friday, March Ist.

Mr N. Blackburn has disposed of his property of 90 acres at Hinuera, through Messrs Finnerty and Darby, to Mr J. Hinlz. The latter has taken possession. Mr and Mrs W. Bond have just returned to Matamata after having been on a motor tour through the Bay of Plenty district. The trip was a most enjoyable one in every respect. The Matamata County council invites tenders for building a bridge at Omahine, carting sand at Waiomou, Okoroire and Matamata, and carting gravel on the Tirau-Cambridge road. An advertisement giving particulars appears in this issue. "The Bing Boys" will appear at the Taihoa hall on Friday of next week. The concert will be followed by a dance for which no extra charge will be made. This will present the last opportunity of hearing the troupe in the original programme. For the first time for many months tenders were received from men other than Dalmatians by the Hungahunga Drainage board on Saturday. And what is more, the " strangers " secured two out of three contracts let. The chairman said the tenders received were creditable. Town sections are still changing hands at advanced figures in Matamata. This week Messrs Finnerty and Darby have disposed of Mr W. Bartlett's twoacre sections to Misses North. The same firm has sold Mr Quillam's quarter-acre section near the railway station to Mrs G. Fussey.

The Hamilton Racing Club will hold its annual meeting at Claudlands on Saturday next, and judging by the acceptances and the class of horses engaged it promises to be the most successful day's racing yet held. To meet the convenience of country patrons the start of the first race has been timed for 1 p.m.

A letter asking for support of its appeal for funds received by the Town board, and considered by it on Monday evening from the Salvation Army included the following passage :—" Two thousand and sixty acres of land has been donated, situated at Putaruru, and this is at present being made into an agricultural training farm for our own and our Allies orphan boys, who will be trained as farmers. Girls will be trained'there as domestics." The land was presented by Messrs George Alexander and Ewen McGregor.

During the past few years possibly no institution in Matamata has made greater progress than the A. and P. Association, which is shortly to hold its eighth annual show. This year, despite the fact that the times and conditions are abnormal, no reduction has been made in the prizemoney. This policy of the association's will doubtless meet with the response expected from exhibitors, and thus, with the excellent arrangements being made, eveiything promises well for a most successful show. The schedule of prizes is now published, and may be obtained from the secretary. It is advisable, so as to assist the secretary in his work, that stock and exhibits be entered as early as possible. Entries definitely close on March 7th.
