MONTHLY PAYMENTS.
Heated Discussion. At the Matamata County council meeting on Tuesday, considerable discussion took place on the question of monthly payments being made "promptly." At the previous meeting Cr Stop - ford had proposed a motion, which had been carried, that cheques should be paid the day following the meeting. The clerk explained that if that were done many vouchers would not be returned and the Government auditor would blame him. Cr. Barnett moved that the previous resolution be rescinded. Cr. Banks suggested that if a cheque was not paid within seven days it should be referred to the chairman. Several other members spoke. " I don't want to be here all day shadow-sparring" said Cr. Barnett in refusing to tack the suggestion on to his motion. He said that in regard to the payment of cheques he had every confidence in the clerk and engineer to see that the men got their money at the earliest opportunity. General cross-table talk took place at this period, Cr. Pohlen taking the view that because one cheque had been held up the confidence of councillors in its servants should not be broken. Crs. Stopford and Rollett denied that their remarks affected their confidence in the servants. Cr. Stopford maintained that the office at Tirau should be opened on Saturdays, so that the men could draw their wages. Discussion again became heated Cr. Stopford being asked by the chairman to withdraw a certain remark, which he did. Ci*. Barnett's motion on being put was carried, Crs Stopford, Banks and Rollett voting against, and Crs. Kirkby, Pohlen, Barnett and Potts voting for.
