MATAMATA TOWN BOARD.
February greeting. The monthly meeting of the Matamata Town Board was held on Monday, the members present being Messrs J Price (chairman), W. A. Gordon, J. Pohlen and J. F. Vosper. FACILITIES FOR FARMERS. The Railway Department wrote stating that the board's request, that seating accommodation be provided in the railway reserve, was receiving the attention of the department. RENT OF OFFICE. Mr Vosper, in referring to a letter from the Farmers' Union re rent, said the rent appeared to be rather stiff. He thought that it would have been lighter. The clerk explained that the hall would be used as an office by the board, and would soon be in demand by ratepayers. Mr Pohlen said he was looking forward to the time when the Town hall would be used as municipal buildings. That was the idea of the promoters of the hall scheme. The offer of the Farmers' Union branch to rent the use of the hall at £7 10s per annum was accepted on the motion of Mr Vosper. WAR WORK. The Salvation Army wrote soliciting the board's support of its appeal for funds to carry on its work with soldiers in the war zone and at home. The letter stated that the sum required from New Zealand was £50,000. Mr Vosper said he was quite in sympathy with the appeal; there was nobody doing better work than the Salvation Army. He would like to see subscription lists taken round, and would head one with a£s donation. (Hear, hear). The chairman said he was willing to take round a list. He thought it would be well supported. It was explained that the board was unable Jtself to contribute through being in its infancy, and having no funds. It was decided that the chairman and Mr Vosper be a committee to open subscription lists, and to avail themselves of any active support they could obtain. The appeal received the wholehearted moral support of the board. WATER TROUGH. The matter of arranging the cost of a supply of water for the water trough in Tower road was left in the hands of the chairman. It was stated that the trough was not for the convenience of townspeople, but for farmers who visited the town. BY-LAWS. A special meeting of the board was held, when the previous resolution re the making of bylaws was confirmed.
