FIRE AT MATAMATA.
Dwelling Totally Destroyed. As a result of fire a two roomed dwelling situated at the back of the main block of buildings in Matamata, was destroyed by fire on Sunday evening. The building was owned by Mr E. Strong and occupied by Mr J. A. Mason. Wind nearly to the force of a gale was blowing at the time and to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings took the combined efforts of a large band of willing workers. The house in most danger was that owned by Mr J. Harding, at one time it seemed improbable that ihe efforts to keep it from catching would be successful. As it was, the walls nearest the burning building were scorched and a window broken. Mr Mason, who was waiting to remove into a larger house, lost all his furniture. It was insured in the State Fire office for £IOO. Renewal of the policy on the house had been omitted, so that Mr Strong is a heavy loser. The cause of the origin of the fire is unknown.
