Mr and Mrs Welch, of Wellington, are on a holiday at Matamata, being the guests of Mr" and Mrs H. Harding. Mr Welch is Mrs Harding’s brother.
A general meeting of the Matamata Fish and Game Conservation society will be held on Thursday evening next, January 31st, to discuss general business and enrol new members.
Mr Ernest E. Leaning, footwear specialist, of Auckland, announces that he will be on a visit to Matamata next week. Inquires may be addressed to Mr H. A. Kelso, chemist.
A clearing sale of Mr C. D. Dawson’s household furniture will be hejd on Wednesday next, when the whole, with the exception of the piano, will be offered without reserve.
Mr P. J. Nathan, of J. Nathan & Co., Wellington, who has been on a business and holiday visit to Te Aroha, motored through to Matamata on Tuesday. Mrs Nathan accompanied her husband.
Another record in takings for the Saturday night’s pictures at Matamata was created on Saturday last. “ The Magnificent Meddler” and the Keystone comedy “Stars and Bars” were the chief attractions, which were very favorably commented upon. Advice has been received by the Y.M.C.A. national headquarters that R. A. Kenner, late of Auckland Star, and one of the New Zealand field secretaries in charge of a Red Triangle hut in France, has been slightly wounded in the head while on service with New Zealand soldiers. Secretary Kenner is a son-in-law of Mr W. Forsdick, of the Taupo Totara Timber Company.
Entries for the Hamilton regatta and carnival, to be held on Anniversary Day, January 28th, close on Saturday. The programme includes twenty water events and a dozen land events, which should provide an excellent day’s amusement. Two-thirds of the proceeds will be devoted to the Waikato Returned Soldiers’ Association,
The farewell social to Mr and Mrs C. D. Dawson will be held this (Thursday) evening, Mr F. Mander M.P., was on a visit to Matamata this week, being the guest of Mr H. Shepherd, of Peria. Miss Violet Robinson, who has been on a holiday visit to her parents, at Tailioa, left Matafor Hamilton on Wednesday.
A staff of Government men are at present engaged in making improvements on the Kaimai road in the Matamata county. The Matamata Town board gives notice of its intention to make by-laws at a special meeting to be held on February 11th. An extraordinary meeting of the Matamata branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union will be held on Saturday evening next to discuss a proposal to alter the day of meeting. Mrs Finnerty senr., accompanied by Mrs J. T. Finnerty, who has been visiting her brother at Thames, returned to Matamata on Saturday, after having enjoyed a pleasant holiday. Mr D. C. Scott, (late of Hamilton) who is at present engaged in building Messrs Beeson and Johnston’s block of shops notifies that he is prepared to undertake building work of any description and guarantees to complete contracts to time.
Sergt George W. Jackson, only son of Rev. and Mrs R. W. Jackson, of Matamata, who has seen nearly two years service in the war zone, arrived in Matamata last week on a visit to his parents. Sergt Jackson, who is attached to a hospital ship, will leave again this week for further duty.
A safe and fast means of removing furniture, and carrying out cartage work of all description has lately been introduced into the Matamata district by Mr R. A. Stanley, in the forth of a motor lorry. Mr Stanley advises that work will be carried out under his own supervision and that charges will be moderate.
The death has occurred on active service of Corporal Walter H. Hewin, of the Canterbury Infantry Battalion on December 17th. Corporal Hewin was the only son of Mr H. Hewin, Manawaru, and left the Dominion with the 11th reinforcements. Prior to enlisting he was well-known in the district as an employee of the Piako County council, for which he acted as road foreman for a number of years. He was a fine stamp of young man, and general sympathy will be extended to his sorrowing relatives.
, Mrs J. T. Finnerty, whose husband was recently killed in France, has this week received a letter from a soldier friend of her late husband, who walked ten miles to ascertain details of Private “Jack” Finnerty’s death. He says: “Your husband died a heroic death in endeavoring to save a comrade. It was whilst digging out a soldier, who had been buried by a shell explosion, that “ Jack ” got hit by a shell, death being instantaneous. It is consoling to know that your husband did not suffer.”
