Brief Mention of all Minor Happenings in Matamata and Vicinity.
A McCormack drill, in good order, is offered for sale cheap. Mr W. Richards will preach in the Matamata Methodist church on Sunday evening next. Tenders are invited for alterations and additions to Messrs Steen and Stanley’s motor garage. A request is made that money collected for the Methodist Red Cross concert be sent in. Mrs G. Mahood, of Napier, is at present on a visit to her mother, Mrs M. Stanley, of Matamata. The timber is on the ground for the erection of shops in Arawa street for Mr Hampson, of Rotorua. Messrs J. W. Finnerty, S. Salisbury and'W. Miles, junr., are at present on holiday, touring the Tauranga and some East Coast districts by motor car. We understand that a. proposal is afoot in Matamata to erect an up-to-date motor garage in concrete. Plans are being drawn up for the building. A special prize is to be offered at the next Matamata A. & P. Association’s show to the lady with the largest family in the Matamata county. The Matamata county council invites applications for the position of dog registrar to the whole county ; also for the supply of 900 dog collars. The person w who borrowed a stock-whip from Mr C. D. Dawson’s stables is asked to kindly return it to the owner Mr T. W. Hannam. The whip was a present from a friend. The heavy rain which fell in the Matamata district on Monday and. Tuesday will have a most beneficial effect. Some grass lands were not previously bearing the bright appearance as at this time last year. The Matamata Methodists held a very enjoyable social evening on the stage of the Matamata hall last week. A nice concert programme was gone through, and the remainder of the evening was devoted to games. The erection of three up-to-date shops has been commenced for Messrs Peeson & Johnston on their property in Arawa street. The suite of offices being built for Mr W. A. Turkington are now nearing completion. Miss Storey notifies that she is opening the shop next the “Record” office as a Drapery and Dressmaking establishment, where goods will be offered at Auckland prices. Miss Storey will have the- assistance of Miss Neal. Notice is given that a special meeting of the Matamata town board will be held on Wednesday, January 23rd, to decide upon a statutory half-holiday for the Matamata township. The day will be decided upon the evidence heard at the meeting. At a well-attended meeting of citizens held on Friday evening, it was decided to tender a farewell social to Mr and Mrs C. D. Dawson, who will be shortly leaving the district. Mr J. Price and Mr W. Ruthe were appointed chairman and secretary respectively; One of the largest audiences yet assembled in the Matamata hall, witnessed the portrayal of the beautiful and thrilling drama “ The Flames of Johannis ” on Saturday evening. The display of the film was particularly clear and was a credit to the hall committee. Notice is given in this issue that a farewell social will be tendered to Mr and Mrs Dawson, on Thursday of next week. During their stay in Matamata Mr and Mrs Dawson have been ever ready to assist in matters affecting the town, and it is thus .considered that their departure should not be allowed without the public showing that their efforts were appreciated.
A draught bay mare, lost from near the show grounds, is advertised for. The by-laws to be adopted by the Matamata Town board provide for a brick area in the business portion of the town. Mr R. Burke has disposed of the chestnut racer, Dandy Breeze, to a Taumaranui sportsman, at a price satisfactory to the seller. During the period the horse was in Mr Burke’s possession he won seven minor races. Prior to his leaving to take up his duties as field secretary to the Y.M.C.A., Mr G. Densem, of Matamata, was tendered a farewell social evening by his friends attached to the Methodist church. The function was one suited to the occasion and before its close Mr and Mrs Densem were called upon to receive handsome presents as tokens of esteem of themselves and the valued work done by them in the district. Mr Densem received the good wishes from his friends for a very successful career in his new sphere.
