ON THE SCREEN.

The Magnificent Meddler. : Antonio Moreno, the star of “ The Island of Regeneration,” plays the title role in the greater vitagraph play, “The Magnificent Meddler,” to be screened at Matamata on Saturday next. He portrays a young newspaper reporter who acquires the great daily known as the “ Horizon Sentinel.” Hevis accompanied on the venture by a cartoonist who never smiles (Bob Gill), and between them, the pair make the affairs of the town more than interesting. Mary Anderson as the heroine is dainty and demure, and has a role which fits her like a glove. She is the daughter of the local “ boss ” who rules the town through fraud and corruption ; but has eventually to surrender his daughter and his corrupt practices before the resistless cheerful energy of the new editor. The story abounds in sensational episodes, and the hero’s devices for overcoming the forces which are astride the town, are ingenious and daring. There are some fine feats of horsemanship and athletic strength in the film, and the whole production is one of the brightest and breeziest that has come from the Vitagraph studies for a long time. A 2000 ft. comedy and Gaumont graphic complete an exceptional programme.
