A household of furniture is advertised for sale by Mr G. Donsen], who is leaving for the front.
Mrs J. Cleave, of Waitara, Taranaki, has been spending the Xmas holidays with her nephew Mr. J. H. Vosper, “ Rawhiti,” Matamata.
The Rev. T. G. Hammond, who, for the last forty years has been a Methodist Maori Missioner, occupied the pulpit in the Matamata Methodist Church at the three services last Sunday.
The hay crops for the . season in Matamata have been generally heavy and practically all have been harvested in good condition. The district farmers have made good preparations for the winter.
There was a general exodus of Matamata residents for various seaside resorts for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The Ellerslie races also attracted a good attendance from the district.
Builders are now engaged in erecting up-to-date pig pens in /the Matamata sale yards. Suggestions in connection with this matter were recently made to the auctioneering firms by the Matamata and Okauia branches of the Farmers’ union.
The Matamata branch of the Red Cross league inserts its bal-ance-sheet in this issue. It shows that the ladies have been exceptionally busy during the year, which was closed with a credit balance of £4B 5s 4d. The members are deserving of congratulations.
When the matter of pooling orders was under discussion by the members of the Matamata branch of the Farmers’ union last week, one member suggested that money might be saved by pooling the orders for Christmas beer. Apparently the members were “full up” in this respect, for the suggestion was not adopted.
A record far a' cinema entertainment in the Matamata hall was attained on Saturday last when the masterpiece, “Intolerance,” was screened. The public appreciated the picture being brought to Matamata, and the comments were fully in accordance with those expressed in the press.
At the conclusion of thp picture programme on Monday evening the Matamata hall was thrown open by the committee for a dance. About 50 couples graced the floor and a most enjoyable time was spent. The music was played by Mr P. C. Ingham, and Messrs C. D. and W. Ruthe were M’s.C. The action of the committee was much appreciated.
Judging from the success which attended the “ bottle O! ” day of the Matamata schoolboys, Matamata is far from being a “dry area.” Ar total of 1,500 bottles were collected in one day, with others to come. Over a dray load of bones was also collected. Further donations will be-appreciat-ed. The proceeds will be devoted to the purchase of War. Loan certificates, to be held in trust for the purchase of prizes.
Mr G. H. Densem,of Matamata, has received notice that he has been appointed a field secretary of the Y.M.C.A. Mr Densem expects to leave during the next few days. During his stay in Matamata Mr Densem has rendered excellent services in several directions, the principal of which was as a local preacher in the Matamata Methodist church. He will be much missed in the district.
