Course aims at jobless
Pupils not able to handle School Certificate subjects are being offered an alternative in some Auckland secondary schools. A special scheme set up mainly to help pupils who could not get jobs has been initiated by the head of the slow-learner department at Onehunga High School, Miss Maureen King, who early this year was seconded to the Department of Education’s regional office. Details of the courses, to be called the Fifth Form Certificate, will be released to headmasters by the department later this month.
At Aorere College, Mangere, where the course began, pupils
will be taught budgeting, how to set up a flat, human relationships, how to get a job and where to start looking, and interview skills.
They will work at the school while others are expected at some schools to get jobs at least one day a week with employers. The department’s regional superintendent, Mr D. Thurston, said that many schools were interested in the preemployment courses. The courses were a complete breakaway — an attempt to make it worthwhile for school leavers to return.
They also were partly aimed at pupils not taking study seriously who caused some disruption.
