Samoa news in brief

The new direct jet service between Western Samoa and New Zealand was not established because Air New Zealand could not get overstayers out fast enough, the Minister of Civil Aviation, Asi Eikeni, said recently. He was addressing guests of Polynesian Airlines at Faleolo Airport on February 24, the day the new jet service started. In his speech the Minister said the service had been started because New Zealand recognised that Western Samoa had a right to carry its people to and from Samoa. This right had been especially appreciated by New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Mr Robert Muldoon. * * * The rate of inflation in Western Samoa for the year ended February 1978 was 5.3 per cent, the Department of Statistics reported.
