Latimer Speech

Many Maori people were shocked by a challenge issued by president of the New Zealand Maori Council, Mr Graeme Latimer. Wellington’s Evening Post headlined the speech . . . ‘Maori Parents Ashamed Of Their Children, Dancers At Ball Told.’ Mr Latimer was quoted as saying at the Maori Leadership Awards Ball, that Maori children were often neglected because their parents were ashamed of them. Those attending the Ball say Mr Latimer did not give this emphasis to his challenge at the Ball but did so later from his home in Northland. A general reaction to the newspapers headline was that papers just like printing the bad news about Maoris. In the meantime, Maori parents intend on taking up Mr Latimer’s challenge.
