Niue’s Day

The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr Muldoon, believes Niue has enough development potential to retain its young people who could share in the shaping of Niue’s future.

“The great potential on this island for development must be an incentive for your young people to stay,” he said.

Mr Muldoon was speaking at the unveiling of a plaque commemorating New Zealand’s gift of a House of Assembly building to Niue in 1974, when the island became self-governing.

He said New Zealand and Niue had formed a special relationship since Niue broke away from its former New Zealand island territory status.

He noted that one of the major problems — the drift of Niuean people to New Zealand — appeared to be easing.
