Speech Contest
It is the custom of Auckland Secondary Schools to hold an annual Polynesian Speech Contest commonly known as the Auckland Metropolitan Polynesian Speech Contest; six of these have been held to date and they took place at Hillary College, Seddon High School and Epsom Girls Grammar School where the last one was again held on Saturday, 17 September from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Students from almost all the colleges in Auckland went to compete. Two judges were selected from each ethnic group namely Maori, Tongan, Samoan, Niuean, and Cook Islands. The standard of the contest was very good especially in the Maori and Samoan sections. The programme for the
day went off very well and it was pleasing to see many prominent guests and visitors including the Mayor Sir Dove-Meyer Robinson and the Consul-General of Western Samoa present. The Principal of the School, Miss Blakey, the Deputy Principal. Mr Bill Sorby, and their most co-operative assistants were excellent hosts and made the day an enjoyable one.
Big hangis and umus (feasts) were held in the school ground to feed contestants and visitors — many of whom went home complaining’ of upset stomachs because they had more food than their tummies could carry. The food was so delicious and plentiful that Continued back page
