Did you know!

Last month three Europeans went to court in the Waikato for possessing over their quota of paua’s. They had a top class lawyer to defend them and they were acquitted. Last Christmas three Maori boys went down to the beach to gather mussells for Christmas dinner. The father of one of the boys was dying of cancer and the family had gathered together, over 60 people, to have this special dinner with him. It was thought no hangi would be complete without seafood, and to make a long story short the boys each had 87 mussells over the quota. They were convicted and the fine was set at $6OO each, a total of $l,BOO. The judge was not interested in why they took them. The whole case lasted 10 minutes. One boy returned to Christchurch, and on appeal, his fine was reduced to $3O. The others were heard in the same district and the penalty stuck.
