The 'Southland Times'says:—" The Southland steamer is hourly expected to ariive in this port from the Bluff. After taking in tiie necessary stores, she will be at once despatched to the Auckland Inlands to prosecute the search for the shipwrecked men supposed to be still in existence there. We believe the cost of the expedition will be defrayed by the General Government, through the representations which have been made on the subject. Ihe pro:rv t:tude displayed in meeting the wishes of the public merits acknowledgment. Ihere is every probability that on the return of the expedition the Southland will be laid on for the West Coast"
The following assertion is from the ' Dunedin Herald ' 4< lt does not look very well for the Peace Proclamation to learn that the native Kereti, who was employed to carry it to \\ aitatora, was shot by the savages to whom he wa> supposed to be the bearer of good tidings As two parties are necessary to make a quarrel, so two are required to effect a reconcdiation. Ihe wav in which the proclamation has been received at Waitotara is anything but encouraging to the friends of peace."
