THE ARROW.
(fbom our,own correspondent.) Thursday, May 5. The following letter has been laid before the Arrow Township Committee, and is now published with their sanction for the information of the Arrow public, who will doubtless receive it as welcome intelligence, satisfactorily dispelling any doubts that may have previously existed as to the proper recognition of their requirements by the Provincial government: — Provincial Secretary's Office, Dunedin, 27th April, 1864. Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, dated the 30th ultimo, addressed to his Honor the Superintendent, urging on behalf of the Arrow Township Committee the advisability of the main line of road being brought through the township, and if possible along the line of the main street, and to acquaint you that instructions have been given to the chief road engineer to carry out the wishes of the Committee. I have the honor, &c., Thomas Dick, Provincial Secretary. Edward Esq., Hon. Secretary, Arrow Township Committee. By the latest report from the Cardrona diggings, it appears the population there is considerably increasing from daily arrivals of
parties of miners retracing their steps from the Molyneux river. The claims on the flat l on which Healy and party have erected their waterwheel, are all yielding good gold, and there, as well as at many other parts of the creek, more ground is being opened up, and the diggings are rapidly extending in size and also importance. An accident occurred to a miner working near the township, on Wednesday last, a very large boulder falling on him from the side of a paddock in which he was working, breaking the bone of his leg and crushing him severely. ! Owing to the distance from the creek to this place, and other unavoidable delays, the sufferer had to wait for many hours before medical assistance could be rendered him. At the head of the Cardrona and on the Moonlight stream parties are still getting payable gold; and are now in many claims preparing snug habitations for occupation during the coining winter. Sluicing operations at Bracken's Gully continue to pay well, and the absence of any other available water supply except that at present in use there, alone prevents the works in the gully being much more widely extended. 1 We notice the following advertisement in the 1 . ° Gazette:—"License Cancelled. His Honor the Superintendent directs it to be notified that he has cancelled the publican's license No 66, granted on Ist October, 1863, to William Fox, of the 1 Shotover, or Four Alls Hotel,' Queenstown." Effect of the Diggings.—The present ! state of the city of Nelson may be thus de- | scribed:—Provisions of every kind are increased in price, labor has advanced from Ss. to 20s. and I 30s. per day; milkmen give their customers I notice that they can be no longer supplied; ships | lose their crews, and captains take off their coats I to help to discharge cargoes ; merchants in their J shirt sleeves, are seen loading vessels with goods I for Have lock ; 'bus and other fares have increased , fifty per cent., and so have the Motueka van, and | the shoeing smiths; potatoes are scarce and dear ; bacon can't be got; and butchers talk of I making meat Is. per pound—and all owing to I the diggings; but the worst of all is, that the I publicans have announced that all drinks are to 1 be 6d. a glass.—Nelson Examiner. | The Sly Grog Case.—On Saturday last Sergeant Lynch sold by public auction all the wine and spirits he had seized on the premises of Messrs. Smith and Hibbard. The auctioneer | entirely failed to obtain but one bid, and that was from the original owners. Although the quantity was valued at some hundreds of pounds | all the G vernmcnt received was only 21. 2s. No ; one would oppose Messrs. Smith and Hibbard. — ! Molyneux Mail, May 3.
