MAORI POINT.

(from our own correspondent.) 6th May. I am sorry to say that the weather has changed, and that the river is again flooded. During the last few fine days parties had got into their ground, and in many instances with good success. The Perfect Cure Company, J.B.B's. beach, got 40 pounds weight out of two small paddocks, and 70 ounces was obtained out of a paddock in Sullivan's old ground. I regret to say that Lugar met with an accident which caused his death. He was taken on the course early in the morning, and was being led round when a policeman cantered by which caused him to rear violently and escape from the boy who was leading him. He then bolted across the course and down over a precipice about 300 feet., Mr Bastian's loss was much deplored, and caused a gloom to prevail over the first day's races. In consequence of the bad weather the stewards have postponed the second day's races until tomorrow. A rather extraordinary accident occurred on the course. The two rival boatmen borrowed horses to have a race round the course. Away they went, like two John Gilpins, and the winning horse had just reached the post, when he dropped down dead—l suppose with joy, for I should think he had never won a race before. MAORI POINT RACES. FIRST DAY—THURSDAY. The weather was everything that could be desired, and the course was well attended. There were about three hundred persons present, including a sprinkling of the fair sex, and many of the Queenstown celebrities. The course was in very good order, and the day's races proved to be very successful. First Race. Maiden Plate. Mr Scoles' Lady Franklyn, (Monaghan) - - 1 Mr Miller's Maori (Prince) - - - - 2 Mr Bastian's Rob Roy (M'Kenzie) - - - 3 A very good start was effected, but Lady Franklyn had the race from the start to the finish, and won easily by two lengths. Betting, Lady Franklyn against the field. Second Race. Upper Shotover Cup. Mr Brooks' Bob Apples (M'Kenzie) - - 1 Mr Scoles' Scrubber (Monaghan) - - - 2 Mr Bracken's Harkaway (Prince) - - - 3 Bob Apples got the lead and kept it throughout the race; he was pushed hard by Scrubber when about two miles round, but the Riverton nag was too good. Harkaway never had a show in the race. Betting, Bob Apples against the field, and 2 to 1 against Scrubber. Teird Race. Hurdle Race. J. Miller's Blackamoor (Bastian) - - - 1 L. Miller's Maori (Prince) - 2 This race caused a good deal of excitement. The horses got away well, and both went over the two first leaps together; at the third jump Basstian was thrown, and Maori baulked, which he continued to do for some time, when Prince managed to get him over, followed by Blackamoor ; they went away together over the next three jumps, when Prince got a spill, which lost him the race. Blackamoor won by about two lengths. Betting 2tol on Blackamoor. Fourth Race. Miners' and Packers' Purse. J. Miller's Blackamoor - 1 D. Anderson's Deceiver - 2 Mr Bracken's Skipper, - 0 This race caused a good deal of excitement, and was won easily by Blackamoor, but a protest was entered into, he not being a packer's horse. The stewards will decide on settling night. Fifth Race. Hack Race. Mr Bracken's Flyaway 1 Mr Miller's Blackamoor - 0 This was the best race of the meeting, and was won by only half a length.
