VISIT OF HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT.
PROSPECTING THE GORGE. Reply to application for Government grant in aid:— Queenstown, 29th January, 1864. Sir, —In accordance with the promise made by me this morning to the Gorge Prospecting Committee, 1 now do myself the honor to inform them, through you, that I have taken into consideration the circumstances under which the application for aid from the Government is made, and will place at their disposal a sum not exceeding £250 (two hundred and fifty pounds) on the following conditions, viz.:— Ist. That an equal sura to that contributed by Government be subscribed from other quarters. 2nd. That the works be open to the inspection of the Warden of the District, who will pay over from time to time to the Committee the Government contribution as the work proceeds. 3rd. The ground, if proved auriferous to be allocated only to bona-fde miners, and its distribution to extend to as great a number as circumstances, and the regulations will admit.
