QUEENSTOWN IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE.
A meeting took place at Bracken's Hotel, on Thursday evening, Mr Gordon in the chair. Present—Messrs. Gordon, Gibson. Cass, Carey. Harris, Weaver, Budd, Bradshaw, and Bracken.
The previous minutes were read and confirmed.
The secretary read the following copy of a letter forwarded to the Provincial Secretary, urging the Government to grant a Circuit Court and Court of Appeal at Queenstown; and also urging the immediate formation of a road between Queenstown and the Arrow, as part of the projected road between Queenstown and Dunstan.
Queenstown, 3rd November, 1863. Sir, —I have honor, at the request of the Queenstown Improvement Committee, to lay before the Provincial Government the following resolution, passed recently by the Committee above-mentioned, for their favorable consideration, viz.:— * That the Secretary be instructed to communicate with the Provincial Government the wishes of the inhabitants of the district for the establishment of a Circuit Court and Court of Appeal." In submitting this request, I would beg to call the attention of the Government to the difficulties and enormous expense to the Provincial Government incurred in obtaining evidence in the various cases forwarded to Dunedin from time to t me from this district, white the personal sacrifice necessarily sustained by business people when prosecuting or giving evidence in town operates most injuriously with regard to the detection and prosecution of criminals; as also in the case of debts exceeding the amount recoverable in the Warden's Court—tradesmen often sacrifice considerable sums rather than incur a trip to Dunedin. I have the honor further to communicate the wish of the people of Queenstown, that it would please your Government to proceed at once with the formation of the road between Queenstown and the Arrow, there being considerable traffic between the two places mentioned, and the two places most closely allied, while the latter place derives a great proportion of its supplies directly from Queenstown. The throwing open' of the projected road would be deemed a most desirable boon to the district I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, B. Cass, Hon. Sec pro tern. To the Provincial Secretary, Province of Otago, Dunedin.
Ihe chairman requested the members of committee to canvass Rees and Camp-streets for subscriptions, at an early date. Proposed by Captain Budd, and seconded by Mr Carey -" That a fine of 2s. 6d. be levied on each member of committee absent after 8.30 p.m., without notice being given in writing to the secretary." Carried.
After a vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting adjourned.
