THE COPPER MINE AT MOKE CREEK.
To the Editor of the Lake Wakatip Mail.
Sib,—Seeing in your issue of the 26th instant a paragraph relating to a valuable discovery of copper recently made at Moke Creek, I beg to state that it was made by Mr. Roberts and, myself some eight or nine months since.
Some specimens of the ore were shown to Mr. Warden Wood, Mr. Bracken, Mr. Manders, and others, and the discovery was duly reported by the last named gentleman to the "Otago Daily Times." Besides, my mate, Mr. Roberts, to test its quality, proceeded to Dunedin* where he had an interview with Mr. Vincent Pyke and with whom he lodged an application for a lease, which has not yet been decided upon. Myself and mate claim to be the original discoverers of this lode, and both the public and the Government have been placed in possession of the facts. It is needless to say that we shall not relinquish, under these Circumstances, our claim for a lease. Yours, &c, John Butson, For self and mate. September 30, 1863.
