THE MASONIC HALL.
To the Editor of the Lake Wakatip Mail. Sir, —Those lines of the poet, "fools rush in where angels fear to tread," aptly apply to Mr. Thatcher in reference to the ridicule which he has attempted to throw upon the ceremony of laying the foundation-stone of the new Masonic Hall. Surely, the fact of the Holy Scriptures being carried as a prominent object in the procession, and of a solemn prayer being addressed to the Deity during the ceremony, should have been sufficient to restrain Mr. Thatcher from any attempt to make fun of a purely religious observance. He might with as much reason go into a church and ridicule the whole service, making the officiating clergyman the especial butt of his unscrupulous wit. It is deeply to be regretted that Mr. Thatcher should thus prostitute those numerous talents which he undoubtedly possesses, and it is to be hoped that he will find other subjects for the amusement of the public than the making a mockery and a farce of what was a religious ceremony. I am, Sir, yours obediently, A Master Mason. July 17,1863.
