RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, LYELL.
Wednesday, 29th September, 1880. (Before Frank Bird, Esq., R.M.) Pearce v. Mason.—Charge of using obscene language in a public place. * The evidence did not bear out the charge and it was dismissed. United Italy Company v. S.J. Reeves.— Claim for <£4 3s 4d, amount of dishonored cheque. Mr Lynch appeared for plaintills. The defence, according to the evidence taken in Nelson, was severely commented upon by the Magistrate, who gave judgment for the amount claimed, costs of court 7s, and counsel's fee £1 Is. E. Carroll v. S. Kelly.—Ciaim for <£4, cash lent. Judgment for amount and costs. Pearce v. Mason.—Claim for sewing two tents, 12s. Judgment for amount claimed and costs. Mason v. Pearce.—Claim for lis, work and labour done, manufacturing two " water-cans," and hire of a wheelbarrow. This proved an intensely amusing case, the only person in the Court who could not see the humourous side of the details being the plaintiff, who conducted his case with a grim seriousness antL&Lility' worthy of a better cause. However, it was no use, all the items put together failed to obtain a judgment for more than 2s, and that too without costs. Bonifacio v. Waters.—Evidence taken under the provisions of the " Resident Magistrates' Evidence Act, 1870," for hearing at Westport.
