HAMPDEN LICENSING MEETING.
The annual meeting of the above Committee took place on Tuesday last, when all the members were present.
The police report was received as read. A letter was read from the County Treasurer, drawing the attention of the Committee to the fact that unless they complied for the future with the provisions of Section 32 of the Licensing Act, 1881, he would refuse to issue any licenses upon the certificate of the Committee. The Chairman then read an opinion he had received from the County Solicitor, stating that it was perfectly legal to grant conditional licenses to holders of accommodation licenses, as they were publicans according to the interpretation clause of the Act.
An anonymous letter was also read, drawing attention to the sale of liquors on Sunday, and to other matters. The Committee refused to entertain it, contending that it was not incumbent upon them to deal with anonymous correspondence. Before dealing with the applications the Committee discussed the letter from the County Treasurer at some length, and finally decided to grant accommodation licenses to all the applicants at the rates following:—A. Smith, Fern Flat Hotel, £10; Stephen Oxnam, Central Buller 'Hotel, £10; John Rait, Commercial Hotel, £10; John Carter, Newton Hotel, £5; Thomas H. May, £5, to keep a ferry over the Matakitaki; and Arthur J. Rowe, for Hampden Hotel, £l, to keep the Matakitaki footbridge in repair.
