Lyell Times. SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 1886.
The usual weekly scraping at the Alpine hatterv did not take pi -ce yester lay, and-the stampers will be kept going until Wednesday, when the monthly cleaning up will be taken in hand. There is no alteration of any importance' to report from the mine, and a good supply of stone is coming to hand. The monthly neeting ol the directors takes place next week.
The next sittings of the R.M. and Warden's Courts, at Murchison, will be held on Tuesday. 13th instant, and on the followiug day Courts will be held at Lyell.
Etiorts are being made to cause the West port District Hospital Board to reopen the matter in connection with Lyell Hospital at their next meeting, when it will be sought to have a full attendance of members, instead of, as at last meeting, an attendance of four. We expect that both our members, Messrs Fennell and Munro, will make it convenient to attend the next meeting, and pending the discussion of the subject then, we will hold over any remarks we intended to make on the subject. A representative of the National Bank from Reefton will visit Lyell next Saturday for the transaction of general banking business.
Our Nelson Correspondent's usual weekly letter appears on the fourth page.
In this issue the United Alpine, Tyr Council, United Italy, Croesus, and Victor Emanuel Companies announce their ordinary half-yearly meetings.
Mr R. W. Jenkins, Bank of New South Wales representative, will visit Lyell next Thursday, remaining until following morning.
Further work in the winze of the United Italy bus disclosed the existence of six-foot reef going strongly to the westward. The men engaged by the Company for further sinking of winze and timbering that portion already sunk, have not yet finished the timbering process. When everything has been made secure it is intended to vigorously proceed with the work of prospecting the reef now laid bare.
D living in the Low Level Tunnel for the past mouth has been extremely hard, beint* entirely through hard rock. Taking this difficulty into consideration, the six men employed, working in three shifts, have made good progress. Nine months ago the tunnel was in a distance of 998 ft, and for the past nine months' operations a distance of 44Gft was attained, making the total distance now into the face 1444 feet.
Morning and evening services will be conducted at St. Matthew's Church tomorrow, by the Rev. Inness-Jones, at the usual hours. The concession of a fuU Sunday service at the church has been earnestly desired for some time past, and now that the object has been attained through the kind instrumentality of the Rev. T. B. Maclean, we hope to see pahshoners evince their appreciation by making their attendance such as will guarantee the continuance of two services each Sunday in the beginning of the month.
We have received complaints lately from Mr George NewmaD respecting the practice of Uaving heaps of firewood 011 the side of an already too narrow road. Only recently Mr Newman was compelled to leave the box seat of his coach in order to clear away an obstruction of this kind some little distance out of Lyell, and on the last trip to Nelson, had a less skilful driver been in possession of the reins, undoubtedly an accident would have occurred at the end of the township from a similar cause. We hope that this intimation will have the effect of causing more care to be exercised in this matter for the future; and those offending in this direction must recollect that it is competent for Mr Newman to lay informations.
We see by report of Inangahua County Council proceedings that Inspector Emerson could not allow the police to accept the appointment of Inspector of Nuisances. We regret this decision as we were anxious to see the appointment of an Inspector for Lyell conferred upon Constable Bowden. We hold that a private individual cannot possibly cany out the duties affecting the position satisfactorily, for many reasons, and foremost is the inadequate salary lor the performance of disagreeable duties. Wholesouieness is what we hanker alter, and no one causes a more wholesome dread to wrongdoers than a police constable.
The Inangahua County Council met last Tuesday, and we are indebted to the Inangahua Times for tlio following in formation affecting our district :—Correspondence inwards * To A. S. Meuteath, thiQikiug him for his valuable
assistance re securing a grant for the construction of approaches to Matikatika bridge; re the construction of road at Murchison, and to the same re bridges.— To Chairman Btiller County re northern boundary of County, and suggesting that the line be definitely fixed.—From MrT. North, solicitor for J. Oxnam, claiming compensation for injuries sustained by Mr Oxnam through the faulty condition of the Newton bridge, and claiming .£IOO. The letter stated that Oxnam was riding over the bridge when a plank gave way, Mie horse falling nnon Mr Oxnam and seriously injuring him. The Chairman said this was only one side of the case, and the best thing to do was to refer the matter to a committee to enquire into it. Referred to the Engineer to report at an early date, and Mr North to be notified to that effrot. —From J. O'Day, complaiuing of Buchanan and party working near the rood at Hampden, endangering traffic. The Chairman said there was no doubt the men were trespassing on the road reserve, which was one chain wide. The matter had been dealt with.
