LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
Melbourne, March 16. The New Zealand Government has definitely declined to take part in the projected Conference of Colonial Governors and Premiers which is to be convened in order to discuss the defence of the Colonies and other schemes of general interest. It is not generally expected that New South Wales or South Australia will join the Conference. The new Victorian Parliament was opened to-day by Commission, after which the members were sworn in. Mr Lawlor was unanimously re-elected Speaker of the Honse of Representatives. An adjournment will be made until June Ist, in order to enable Ministers to mature their policy. Hobart, March 17. Further examination shows that only two men on board the Diamond are suffering from typhoid fever and seven from simple fever, the remaining eight patients are progressing rapidly towards convalescence.
