Facca volcano has broken out near Guatemala, destroying totally the village of San Vincent. The Wellington Exhibition Committee have declared two of the essays on the industries of the colony equal. They were found to be written by William Reeve Haselden, of Westport, and Richard Winter, editor of the Marlborough Express. The third is by George Robert Hart, of the Press newspaper, Christchurch. The Government have decided to give to each of the first a gold medal, and to divide the money. The essays will probably be published. A correspondent of the Otago Daily Times, writes:—l would not touch on the subject of the East and West Coast railway. Wellington knows perfectly well that she is the chief feeder of the numerous West Coast towns and Nelson. Consequently she fights fair and foul to have this scheme fall through. We, of Otago, allow ourselves to be blinded by Wellington, (for of course she direotly invokes our aid) and with them throw as much cold water on this pet scheme of Canterbury and Nelson as must make the hearts of the Welliugtonians rejoice. I am not interested in the slightest degree m this railroad, but as an impartial and disinterested Otago resident I must say it shows very bad on our part to fight so hard against this railway proposal. Surely to goodness if our Otago Central is worthy of construction, much more then should be the East and West Coast line. But that is the way; the whole of the colony (with the exception of ourselves of course) is death on our Otago Central, and we in our turn take good care to howl down every other scheme that benefits our neighbours.
