The Colonial Oaice having received a communication from the Colonic? relative to tbe lowering of the Samoan flag by a party of marines from the German man-of-war Albatross, ha« replied to the effect that there is no reason to believe that Germany intends to annex Samoa. Mr A. L. Packson, M.P. for Leeds, has been appointed Secretary to the Treasury. Madrid, January 12. News is to hand from Carthagena of an abortive attempt ata Republican rising which had taken place there. Although tht disturbance was not of a serious nature the Governor of the city was wounded. London, January VI. The Right Hon. Arthur Wellesly Peel has been unanimously re-elected Speaker of the House of Commons. Berlin, January 12. In reply to representations from the English Foreign Office on the subject of recent events in Samoa, the German Government have replied that they are without any information on the subject, but any inteation of annexation is disclaimed.
