SHOOTING WITH INTENT.
A serious affair, liy which a Denniston collier, a young man named Thomas Smart, received a severe gunshot wound in the shoulder, happened at AVaimangaroa on the night of the lltli inst. Smart was formerly of Brunnerton. an I the person now in custody on the charge of having done the u-ly deed, is a Frenchman, called Perou. From the particulars to hand, it appears that Smart and some friends tried to p iy a visit to a neighbor's place in which Perou happened to be at the time, but not gaining admission, they left. A little time afterwards, Smart returned, as he says, ia search of a mate of his named Bradley, whom he supposed to be inside; and receiving an answer to the effect that the party would be out directly, waited. Suddenly the door opened, and Smart got the wound as described, the charge setting his coat on fire, and thus favouring the supposition that his assailant was very close to him. Dr Gaze is attending to the wounded man, and although the injury is not considered a dangerous one, still, a very slight difference in its situation might have meant fatal consequences. The charge entered just above the right armpit, and came out over the shoulder; tearing the muscles, but without touching the bone or joint. From the appearance of the wound, the Dr is of opinion that a bullet was used. No is assigned for the deed. Perou was brought up before two Justices, and remanded t® the 17th inst.; bail being allowed, himself in <£*2oo, and two sureties —Messrs Simon and Easton, in £IOO each.
