Mr G1 adstone, in a speech to the electors at Edinburgh, considered that the Irish demands for large self-governing powers were not alarming, assuming that there was nothing required by them which would in any way jeopardise the unity ot the Empire. The Marquis of Salisbury, speaking at the Lord Mayor's d.nner at the Guildhall predicted that the conference at Constantinople would not result in any durable settlement being arrived at oil the Koumelian question.
