PARLIAMENTARY GOSSIP.
Wellington, July 23. The East and West Coast Railway is the general subject of comment. 44 Hu°-e swindle," " gross job," 44 one of VogePs own schemes,'" and such like terms with large intermixtures of strong adjectives are the terms generally m use here. So | strong is the feeling against it that it was currently rumoured this afternoon Major ;j Atkinson would mow a vote of no conI fide nee.
July 24. It is said that a young New Zealand party has been. formed to watch the progress of events. This party, the size of wiiich may be described as commensurate with the piospects of doing any harm, is understood to be distinctly opposed to the East and West Coast Railway proposals.
July 25. Lobbying is actively going on over the Government proposals re the East pud
West Coast Middle Island ItaiUvay. It is stated oil good authority that the Canterbury, Nelson and Westland members, with two or three exceptions, probably Messrs Seddon, Turnbull, and liees, will rrive a block vote in favor of the scheme. Opinions for and a-ainst are so decided, and each member having bis own little fad to work out, tint it is questionable whether Voxel's proposJs will pass.
