Telephone Offices have been opened at the following placesHenot, Tuapeka County ; Totara Flat, Grey County ; and Ferntown, Collmgwood County. The hours of attendance are,—9 a.m. till 5 p.m.; in addition to which, the two firstnamed, open from 7 to 8 at night. All will be closed on Sundays and holidays.
Mr William llearns, waggoner, who has, of late, been engaged plying between here and W estport, had the misfortune to meet with a rather serious accident on Monday last, by which he got one of his legs broken. From the very scanty paiticulais which reached us re fj, ardin ,r the accident, it would appear that Kearns was descending from his seat, when, either through a slip, or some entanglement in one of the fore-wheels the limb got fractured, thus entirely disabling him and he lay under the waggon tor some hours, until found by a passing horseman. Ihe accident occurred somewhere in the vicinity of the narrow, rock sidling cutting, known as the " Hawk's Cra<*." ihe assistance of those living neare t having been procure I, the sufferer was at once taken to the Westport Hospital in a cuioe. We are glad to hear that the break is not what might be called a bad one. Our mining report, and notice of the Anglican Church Parishioners' Annual meeting, are both unavoidably held over. According to announcement, the Faust Family gave another of their popular entertainments here last night; and although the rain, and the threatening appearance of the weather during the early part of the evening, no doubt combined to deter a good number living at a distance, from attending, still, there was a very fair house, and the continuous applause and marked appreciation shown as the diffeient portions ot the programme were dealt with, certainly testified as to the abilities of the nerfbrmers in their varied capacities. They open at Murchison, to-night, and we recommend our up-country friends to see them.
In the Resident Magistrate's Court, at Reeftom, before G. C. Bowman, and G. Vise, Esq's., J.P., Israel Pollock, a hawker, was charged, upon the information of the police, with cruelly ill-using a horse, by overloading. The evidence showed the animal was a- very (©ld one, quite out of condition and unlit for work,' and having in addition a very bad back. A fine of i>s, with costs, was imposed, defendant getting a caution that a incurrence would meet with imprisonment, instead.
A fire broke out m a printing office in Sixth street, Cincinnati, 011 May -21st. Many of the workpeople were in the upper stories, and eight girls jmuped from the windows, five being killed. I n all seventeen persons were burnt to death or killed by jumping down.
Mi Fisher s Pol.ce Offences Amendment BUI is of a drastic character, and proposes to inflict a penalty of six months' imprisonment with hard labor upon any
person who is the occupier of any house or place which is frequented by reputed thieves, prostitutes, or persons who have no visible lawful means-of support, who shall be deemed an idle and disorderly person, and to he keeping a disorderly house. The Dill further provides that any person found in any such house, room, or place as aforesaid in company with any Mich reputed thieves, prostitutes, or person who do not give a good account of his lawful means of support, and also of his being m such house, room, or place upon some lawful occasion, shall be deemed an idle and disorderly person within the me ining of said Act, and shall be liable to imprisonment for any time notexcee ling three months. Any person who appears to be the master or mistress ot such house so frequented is liable to punishment, and any offence herein described may be dealt with summarily by two Justices ot the Peace or Resident Magistrate.— G. ]l.
