LAMPS IN WOOLSTON.

GAS COMPANY’S CHARGES. BOROUGH COUNCIL OBJECTS. At the meeting of tho YVoolston Borough Council last night, tho Mayor (Mr J. J. Graham) mado references to the price that the-Gas Company proposed to charge for the lamps in the borough. Ho said that it was outrageous for the company to attempt to raise its charges. Tho present rate was £4 per lamp per annum, and four months’ notice of discontinuance. Tho company now wanted to raise the pried to £0 per lamp and six months’ notice. He was suns iho borough would not stand it. Councillor J. Hobson strongly supported tho remarks made by the Mayor. Ho moved that the Gas Company should lie written to, stating that the council could not agree to the request and asking tla company if that was its final decision. Councilor D. M’Rao seconded, tho motion.

Councillor L. Hart said he thought that, owing to tho treatment tho council had received from the Gas Company, it should give the company no chance. He moved as an amendment that tho Gas Company should be given one month’s notice to cease lighting the borough. Councillor C. Hill seconded the amendment. The Mayor said ho thought that they should wait a while before giving notice. They had people to consider and must not leave tho borough in darkness. He was in favour of sending tho letter to the Gas Company. Councillor J. Hobson said he was thoroughly in sympathy with the amendment. Speaking for himself, he was in favour of cutting the light off straight away, but there wore people of tho borough to be considered. The amendment was put and lost and the motion was carried.
