OBITUARY.

MRS 8. A. ANDREWS. Tho death took place on Saturday, after a brief illness, of ono of Ashburton’s oldest and most esteemed residents in the person of the relict of the late Mr I homas Andrews and mother of Mr G. YV. and A. E. Andrews. Mrs Andrews was bom in Norfolk, England, in 1830, and camo to New Zealand in 1812, in tho sailing ship Prince of Wales, and lived for some years in Nelson, removing to Ashburton in 1875. Mr Andrews built ono of the first houses in what is now the Hampstead Town Board district, and with Ins wife lived there till eleven years ago, when ho dic-d at the age of eighty years. Mrs Andrews continued to reside in tho same house till the day of her death. She was widclV known for her countless deeds of kindness, more especially in tho early days of Ashburton’s .history. Ail appeal for help was never made to her in vain, and if she k.ijow of anyono in distress she was always anxious to do all she could to help. She took a keen and active interest in temperance work from her early youth, and had always been an activo and valuable worker in connection with tho Wesleyan MethodistChurch. She was a member of. the Ladies’ Guild of the Ashburton Baring liqugrc’ Church up to tho hour of her death, and up to within a few weeks to passing away she attended the meetings regularly and took her full share in tho work. She leaves a family of six daughters and three sons, and twenty grandchildren and nine great-grand-children.

J. R. -SCOTT. Mr J. It. Scott, until recently secretary of tho South Island Dairy Association, died at TimaiM on Sunday. RICHARD MONK. Mr Richard Monk died at Knikoura yesterday, at the age of eighty-seven. He celebrated his golden wedding Inst Oeiober. Mr Monk was born at Minchinh.amptou, Gloucester, England. At tho age of fourteen years ho joined tho British Navy and sailed in tho Vanguard, one of the first British warships equipped with engines. .After four years, he was paid off, entered tho merchant service and arrived at tho Ray of Islands in 1819. Subsequently lie was employed as a butcher by the late Sir John Lonan Campbell, in Auckland, until 1852. Ho went, to YVellingtoh four years later, but was lured to the Victorian gold diggings in 1858. and there met the late Mr Thomas Cawthron. of Nelson. They were engaged in business together for throe years. Yfr Monk then returned to New Zealand, and was for some time on the Collingwood diggings. Later lie proceeded to Blenheim, thence to Kekerangu. \vb.ero, with hia wife and children, ho remained about six years. In 18G0 he went to Boat- Harbour. Amnri, where he remained until a few years ago, when lie crossed to tlio Conway Month villngp, and finally took up his residence in Knikoura lastyear. Dir Monk is survived by his wife, four daughters, eight sons, fortynine grandchildren and twenty greatgrandchildren.
