♦ ' TELEGRAPH MATCH. CANTERBURY r. CHEVIOT. The chesß match by telegraph ’between a junior team of the Canterbury Chess Club and a team representing the Cheviot Chess Club, commenced on Saturday, was continued la3t night, the local players conducting their gaines in tho Y.M.C.A. Mr ’ H. Kennedy wae tho umpire for Cheviot at Christchurch, and Mr E. Williamson watencd [ho interests of tho Canterbury representatives at Cheviot. Mr H. 1. Bennett again carried out tha duties of telegraphist Ot' the Chrißtcburoh end iu a highly efficient mauner, and tho movos trom cheviot wore also dispatched accurately and with promptness.
Soon after play was commenced last night, Gray (Canterbury) at board 10 worked up a mating position and his opponent,' Childs, rosigneu on the twenty-second move. Canterbury therefore scored first blood. Tho noxt gamo to bo finished was at board 7, where Fletcher, secretary of tlie Cheviot Club, effected a. neat combination, which brought about the downfall of his Richardson, on the thirtieth move. At board 9, Pihl, Canterbury representative, followed up the advantage which lie held from the previous night’s play, *lkT mated his opponent, the Rev J. Pari an e, on the fortyfourth move. At board 1. Holton (Cheviot) initiated -an attack, but Joseph parried carefully. Gibb (Canterbury)' at board 2 won his opponent’s’ queen, the Cheviot player (Dr Saunders) having misplaced the pieco ana leaving it cu prise. Dr Saunders resimied on the twjfiitv-oiglith move. At board 3, Clarke (Canterbury) first gained the exchange of rook for knight and later won, a clear piece. Chapman (Cheviot) in a good fighting game won a pawn from Messenger; end at hoard 5. Holton (Cheviot) also won. a pawn from Black, who made a weak move. The game at board G between Shilhto (Canterbury) and Skinner continued of an oven nature, as did the game at board 8 between Hill (Canterbury) ehd Westvupp. The scores of the completed game are as follow: Canterbury.
