• The New Brighton Borough Council mot last evening; present—The Mayor tMr J. A. Fieshcr) and Councillors F. Kibblewhito, J. Buxton, W. H.. Boliamy. H. Christian, T. Cox, C. H. Winny, J. Ashley and E. M. Leaver. "' -,'■-, An application from Mr A. T. treeman for permission to build on a section in Fleming Street, which is under the prescribed area, was referred to the commttteo for consideration. , , „ Mr H. Antill Adley, socretary of tho Canterbury Fire Underwriters' Association, wrote statinp that tho association regretted it could not contribute towards.the funds of tho locai fire brigade; as it was contrary 10 the policy of tho association.' It was decided tp reply suggesting that tho association should alter its regulations to permit of assistance being given. The following recommendations of tho committee were adijnted:— That the alternative tender of Messrs Johnson and Wilkinson for erection of barricades be accepted; that Mr M. Ryan bo appointed dog ranger; that, as all othor reserves in the borough aro vested in the council, the Crown be requested to vest the naval reserve in tho council; that, application having been made for permission to erect s. bathing, shelter on tho beach, tho council bo recommended to ask the town clerk of Napier as .to iho conditions rogtuaung tho erectioil of shelters on tho foresiioro at Napier; that Mr Lnwry's application to leaso part of reserve 1579 bo not granted. Councillor Ashley drew attontion to tho state of tho tram track along tho Esplanade, and tho road on tho' sea' side of the rails. It was decided to write to tho Tramway Board asking that something should bo done to fill up tho spaces between the mils. Councillor Bellamy advocated the erection of an enclosure at North Brighton, at an estimated oost of £3O, the major portion 01 which could bo raised by public subscription. The erection of the enclosure would obviate tho damago which is being done to tho marram grass planted tliero. Tho suggestion received' the endorsement of the council. Tho treasurer's report for the fortnight ended September 22 showed the receipts to havß been £153 Cs Td, and tho expenditure £IOO 12s Id. Permits wcro jsHU=d lor buildings valued at £1)30. Tho debit baianco at the bank totalled £675 17s Sd. 'lho temporary loans account was in debit to tue extent of i'1730. . , „ It was decided, on tho motion of Councillor Buxton, that tenders shouwl bo called for the erection ot fencing in tho domain so that cattle'could be kept out.
RICCARTON. Tho -Riccarton Borough Council mot last night; present—Tho Mayor (.Mr J. Brown), and Councilors A. I). Ford, J. Munuings, A E. Steere, H. Oudsall, T. J. Stokes, A. Hampton,.ll. W. Wise and W. Dalley. The Works .Committee reported the removal of the whole of tho gas lamps within the borough. A start had been made with the luctu.liug ot Dcans's Avenue, north of Riccarton Road, and the sides had been graded. .Channelling on tho east side of Clarence Street had been finished, and a portion of tho footpaths had been widened, and wore graded io a proper level. The report was adopted. T.iC aprcydon Borough Council asked for another conference on the question of Sre prevention. The request was acceded to. A motion was .passed expressing appreciation of the work of the Lighting Committee in connection with the installation of electric •light in the borough. ,:
