OBITUARY.

HENRY WILLIAM PIPER. The death occurred yesterday of Mr Henry William Piper, at his residence, 117, Rugby Street. Mr Piper until recent years was a farmer at Duvamchelle, and he was a well-known figure in agricultural and motoring circles. He was the second son of Mr Henry, Piper and was born at Duvauchelle s Bay on May 5, 1865, and educated at Duvauchelle and Christchurch. He was engaged in farming with his father until 1888, when, in conjunction with his brother, he leased his father's property, of which, when his brother died in 1893, he assumed control. For some years lie was a member of the Akaroa County Council, and also of the Duvauchelle's Bay School Committee. He was one of the organisers of the Peninsula Horse Show, and was president of the Show Committee. He was a keen and enthusiastic rifle shot, being for many years a member of the Duvauchelle Rifle Club and Peninsula Rifle Association and latterly of the Christchurch Rifle Club. Since ho oame to live in Christchurch Mr Piper devoted much time to motoring, and as a member of the Canterbury Automobile Association was successful in winning prizes at the reliability trials in the private owners' claes. A few weeks ago he was nominated for the presidency of the Automobile Association, but on account of failing health was obliged to decline the honour. Sir Piper, was married in 1891 to Miss N. M. Lord, of Christchurch, who, with two children, survives him. The funeral will take place at Duvauchelle to-morrow at 1.30 p.m. W. J. HANNA. The late Mr W. J. Hanna, whose death occurred on September 17. was an old and greatly esteemed resident of the Sefton, Broomfiold and Leithfield districts. He came to Canterbury in the ship Chariot of Fame in the year 1859. For some time after his arrival he found employment as a sawyer in tho Ohuroh bush near Kaiapoi. He afterwards joined his brother, Mr T. Hanna, in farming at Sefton, but subsequently acquired knd for himself in the Broomneld "district, which he farmed with success until about three years ago, when he retired to Leithfield. He was for many years a-director of the Sefton Mutual Dairy Association, but took no active part" in local body work. He leaves a widow and three married daughters, Mrs J. Russell and Mrs T. James, of Leithfield, and Mrs White, of Waiau.
