CONSCRIPTION. OPPOSING CAMPAIGN STARTS. BIG SYDNEY MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SYDNEY, September 23. The anti-conscription campaign was opened in the Town Hall, which was packed, and there was a big overflow meeting in the street. Mr \V. F. Finlayson, M.P., and other Federal members.were the chief speakers. The proceedings wero orderly, and resolutions were carried against conscription for service abroad, and pledging tho use of every lawful means against carrying the referendum. . REFERENDUM BILL PASSED. MELBOURNE September 23. The Senate, after a thirty-six hours' sitting, read the Referendum Bill for the third time by 17 votes to 9. TRADE UNION CONGRESS. conscription plans and adjourned until Monday. CHARGE OF TREASON. I.W.W. MEMBERS ARRESTED. (Received September 24, 6.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 21. The police raided the headquarters of the I.W.W. and arrested four prominent members, Reeve, Glynn, Larkin and Hamilton, on a charge of treason. They seized a quantity of literature and other effects.
