PEACE TALK.

AMERICAN PROPHECY. GERMAN MOVE IN OCTOBERWILL TEMPT PRESIDENT WILSON TO ACT. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. NEW YORK, September 22. The United Press has received the following London despatch:— Germany will make another attempt to fly the peaeo kite about the middle of October, according to tho expectations of British military ana civilian authorities. Apparently well authenticated rumours havo reached London that Germany has suffered immense losses in tho recent Allied offensive, and is endeavouring to suggest an armistice through Spain or the United States. • 4 It is understood that King Alfonso is not responsive, and the Germans now hope to tempt President Wilson on the grounds that if he is successful it will favourably affect his reelection. . Americans conversant with inside British sentiment are certain that such a move through Washington can only fail. It would also be bitterly resented by the Allies, and .would permanently eliminate Washington as a possible mediator. Every indication points to the fact that not only are the Allies unfied for the purpose of continuing the war until a decisive peace is obtainable, but also that tho Army, Navy and political leaders are united in their determination to assume the responsibility, if necessary, for the war's continuation after Germany is willing to quit. The British soldier's only present worry is regarding tho possible overoptimism of civilians because of recent and coming successes. The soldiers realise that tho Germans arenot yet beaten, and that a long and arduous task confronts them.
