WATER SUPPLY BOARD.

WAIMAEARIRI-ASHLEY DISTRICT The monthly meeting of the Wai-makariri-Ashley Water Supply Board was held on Thursday; present--Messrs Dixon (chairman), Wayland, Moderate and Cooper. Mr Cooper was heartily welcomed back after his long absence through sickness. The surveyor's report, which was approved, stated that during'the previous twenty-eight days the. daily average depth of water on site of intake at Brown's Rock headworks had been oft 10in, and during the twenty-two days the race had been running the daily average depth of water passing the flume at block outting had been Ift 6in,.giving a full supply to the district. The race was shut off for six days fox* part of general cleaning time, and during that time.>the tunnel had been cleaned, and also several parts of ths head race,, including the' removal of fallen boulders from the block cutting. The "Nine Chains" not having been cleaned for two years was in a danger, ous state in regard to overflow and must be immediately attended to, henca the water must be cut off for another, six days, and then all general cleaning work would be completed for this sea- . son. The river remained in a favourable position. During the period there were three "freshets/' rising to».9ft Sin, 7ft 4in and Bft 4in on the gates, hut no damage was done to any protective works.. The team had been employed cleaning the tunnel, shifting shingle from the tramline,- ploughing and sluicing the head race above Glen s flume, clearing banks of the race and carting materials to by-washes. A concrete b*idge had been placed over the main race on Wolff's Road, at the junction of Harewocd Road, and a second one over the same Tace into Mr Wolff s land further south. A new culvert had been placed over the main race, Fernside. Mr Blacket's bridge had been completed and the main race had boon cleaned from „Ohoka Road to the Oust flume. Other portions of main races and Cust township race under tn« charge of the board had also been attended to, and the system generally was in good order. i With reference to letters from tne RangioTa County Council, the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Christchufch Automobile Asso- ' ciation in connection with putting motor bridges over the water-race on Ashley Street, Rangiora, the secretary reported regarding an interview on ground . After consideration the board decided to write to the County Council stating that it could not see its way to take* the responsibility of putting motor-car crossings on the footpaths of ! Street ford near the show grounds. The board proposed to treat the crossing in the same manner as it had done on other public roads, namely, by covcrmj? in 21ft in the centre with a concrete culvert. The board would, however, he pleased to co-opevate with the oouuca in any reasonable scheme which wmjiot involve the board in any responsibility, and suggested that the council sbon.a also confer with the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Christchurch Automobile Association on the matter. . ' , The question of a bridge over the race on Fernside-Swannanoa road to Air Smith's land was left in the hands off the surveyor. ■ , It -was agreed to put a .concrete bridge over the main race on the road near Mr Smith's land, Fernside, and to renew the long fluming near the dip on Springbank. The surveyor was asked to inspect the flume in Wrights and bridge in Smith's at Fernside. It was resolved that the balance of general cleaning time be left in the hands of the chairman and the surveyor. The secretary was requested to inform the Fornsido School Committea that the charge for water supply to tha school bath would b© remitted this year, as the bath was not going to be used It was agreed to got quotations foi supply of jarrah timber in useful sizes so as to procure a stock and not buy in small lots."
