Mr William Henry Brooking, who met with an accident on returning to the town from the racecourse on the fiist day of the Ashburtou race 3, through falling from a drag, died at tho Askburton County Hospital yesterday, never having regained consciousness. Ah inquest was opened yesterday before Mr V. G. Day, Coroner, but was adjourned until Friday. Mr Brooking arrived; in New, Zealand thirty-one years ago ? and for two years resided at Kaiapoi. He then came to Askburton, where he has remained ever scince. Ho was a member of the St Stephen's Anglican Church, and took great interest in the choir, of which he was a member for many years. He had been. a member of the Foresters' Lodge since ho was eighteen years of age. He leaves a widow. ■ v : , . •,■
