THE CENSUS.
NATIONAL STOCKTAKING NEXT . MONTH,.,,?: .' ? :' :
Preparations are now being made for the quinquennial census, which will ba taken at midnight on Sunday, October 15. The Government -Statistician (Mr Malcolm Fraser) has his hands very full at the present time, owing to the rush of work in oonnectipn with the formation of the. Expeditionary Force Reserve, and he will not have completed the rolls of Reservists before the date fixed for the census. But the preliminary work has proceeded, and the census forms are now ready for distribution' to. the sub'enumerators, whose duty it will be to see that one form reaches every occupied house in the Dominion before the 15th day of next month. The census would have been taken in April of this year under normal conditions, but it was postponed by the Government owing to the war. The original intention was to hold the work over until the conclusion- qt peace, but later information showed that the movements of population since 1911 had been important, and the Ministry decided that the census should be taken in the present month. 'The estimates already made have 'shown that a very, big increase of population in A-dckland, involving additional Parliamentary representation, will be a feature of. the census returns.
